It has been called many things; Amazing, Awesome, and obviously, Great! It is often referred to by those that have done it, as “the adventure of a lifetime”. While many think about it as simply an amazing ‘boating adventure’, the very best part of America’s Great Loop is where it takes you. This voyage is as much about the remarkable destinations and experiences ashore, as it is on the water.
Having been involved with Looper Organizations, speaking at USACE & USCG seminars, Boating Forums, and a few thousand questions from my website, it is obvious that the vast majority of questions and concerns come from men, and are all about the “boat”. From the best type and size of boat to experience needed, it all involves the more ‘technical’ side of cruising the Loop. It’s no wonder so many potential future Loopers have reluctant spouses.
Men have a tendency to put all our attention on the boat and boat related issues. That leaves most spouses thinking “America’s Great Loop is nothing more than a really long and boring boat ride”. Truth is, that’s everything this voyage is not!
All along the way, the natives are friendly, their food is fantastic, and this is where you will discover there is an awful lot of fun and excitement to experience on shore. This is where you will find your very most indulgent luxury, is time. We encourage you to take as much of it as possible. You will need to remain in each geographical area for the duration of its most comfortable weather. As a result, it is important to spend as much or more time ‘off your boat’ relaxing, being a tourist, and having fun on shore, as you are cruising.
One of the most often mentioned regrets of previous Looping couples is going too fast and not taking enough time to stop, shop, eat out, stay, and linger longer at more incredible destinations and attractions that interested them the most. Such places as Shiloh, Wash. DC, the Smithsonian, Baltimore, Annapolis, Niagara Falls, New York City’s Time Square, Statue of Liberty, Mackinac Island, Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame, Florida’s Disney World or Cape Kennedy’s Space Center and many other popular tourist sites, together with so many ‘hidden gems’, are what makes this voyage so incredible. Many of these places are in locations you may never be so close to again.
Our most fervent recommendation is to ‘take your time’. Take your time cruising and take your time on shore. Enjoy the route, the scenery, the museums, restaurants, tourist attractions, and unique one-of-a-kind destinations along the way.
