The Illinois River is the waterway that connects the Great Lakes at Chicago to the Mississippi River at Grafton.
This waterway link out of Chicago includes the Chicago River, the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, and the Illinois River.
The waterway is heavily used by barges' transporting bulk goods, and by tourists in pleasure boats, most of whom are cruising America's Great Loop.

From Chicago, it is 334 miles down the Illinois River to Grafton, IL and the convergence of the Mississippi River.
lead to the Illinois River. The most scenic of course takes you from the Chicago River Lock right through downtown Chicago. In order to take this route however, your vessel must clear a 17' over-head bridge.
If your boat can't clear a 17' bridge, but can clear a 19' 1" bridge, then you must take the alternate Cal-Sag route (just south of Chicago) in order to reach the Illinois River.

WHAT THE GUIDEBOOKS DON'T TELL YOU!
In Peoria, there are Marinas to choose from. One,
the Peoria Transient Marina has no services
available, but there is a machine on the dock that
accepts dollar bills and allows you to enter the
amount of time you will spend. It then prints a
receipt showing your departure time. . . and the
price is only a $1.00 an hour regardless the size of
your boat. (WOW! We love that!). Greater still,
however, is that it is right on the riverfront only a
hundred feet or so from Joe's Crab Shack and
Damon's steakhouse.
The section of the Illinois River between
the La Grange Lock at mile 80.2 and the
Illinois Riverdock Restaurant mile 20.9 is
the most scenic. And my son and I readily
admit that we love to stop and eat out at all the
interesting looking places we find. The Illinois
Riverdock Restaurant is one of our very
favorites. Don't miss it unless you absolutely
have to.
This leg of your trip is 334 miles.

The alternate Cal-Sag route, junction is located at the
Calumet Harbor about 11 miles south of the Chicago
River Lock. Assuming of course that you can clear that
19' 1" bridge we've been telling you about, then the
remaining bridges on this route are not an issue.
The Chicago Lock is mile 326.7, and this leg of your
journey will take you to Grafton, ILL which is mile 0 on
the Illinois River.
